Windows 98/98SE/ME tips and Tricks: Display preview of *.BMP files as Icons (in Windows Explorer) It's possible to make the icons for bitmap files be thumbnail images of the bitmap itself. Here's how:

Start the Registry Editor Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Paint.Picture \ DefaultIcon In the right-pane, double click on the (Default) entry, and change it's value to %1 Close the registry editor and restart Windows Note: This only works as long as the .BMP extension is associated with the Windows Paint program. If your .BMP extension is associated with another program, you'll have to find the registry key which describes the .BMP association, and make the changes there.
